As for your point I take that on board and agree. We can't put them in order based on gut feeling but I am looking at it outside of my own personal preference purely because if it was up to me David Tennant wouldn't get ranked!
I think Hartnell has a lot of good stories and he did start it, whether it would have been a success without him to begin with yes we'll never know but we can't take away what he gave to the show. His Doctor was by far the most "out there", he was rude, mean, nasty and had a violent streak. He ran on his emotions to an even heightened degree and was a nasty old man. The very limited stuff I've seen of his era has been interesting and pretty great fun.
Do I think he should be number one on any basis other then he's the first?
To be honest I can't answer that.
Going on my preference it would be Colin Baker, Matt Smith, Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton at number one the rest can go blow it. Is that helpful to debate? No. The only thing I can really argue is based on the patchy (at best) memories I have of each series era. The only three I've seen EVERY episode of and remember them to a good standard are Eccles, Tennant and Smith (well McGann as well!) so I have to use a different set of whatevers to mark the classic Doctors.
Hartnell : I've seen 4 or 5 serials, personally think he's a great Doctor and as I said above the most different.
Troughton : Seen about.... 3 serials plus the Five Doctors and the Two Doctors. I love his impish behaviour and how he can go from being so funny and wild to being so serious that it scares you. Helped by some of the best companions I've seen! Really brought the best out of him
Pertwee : Everything about his era ticks the boxes as you said. But are we marking them on era or personality? Pertwee on his own was a bit bland in my opinion, oh he's an eccentric Doctor of course but his biggest strengths were always his relationship with other characters. He had great comic timing as well but it was always very faint. I love him but I'm not sure that is because he was a great Doctor or because the whole era was just fantastic.
T.Baker : Most loved worldwide yeah sure, I grew up with him as my favourite but by now I'm just not into his era much. It kind of bores me and the latter episodes always seem to be too over the top and his acting is everywhere. I like Tom but it is the obvious choice because you then get people going BUT TOM!
Davison : Bored me, one of my least favourite Doctors. Saying that I do actually like his era!
C.Baker : My favourite Doctor by far. He was just different, I loved his wit and that he was quick with the come backs, he was unashamedly a genius and he got under peoples skins. Just a lovely Doctor but who wore his heart on his sleeve.
McColl : Fun. Didn't like his era much but he was still fun.
McGann : Actually did a fine job of what he was given and the audio's boost him no end, great Doctor.4
Eccleston : Brilliant but let down by some stupid scripts, had so much more to give. His Doctor is always lowly ranked by me mainly because it was like they never engaged Chris in general in the scripts. I see him more favourably now after rewatching them but if anything was the Doctor paint by numbers to bring in the new viewers.
Tennant : Actually.... I like him, he was fun. He had his moments when he was bloody brilliant. NOT the best Doctor in the world but a pretty damn great one all the same.
Smith : Best Doctor in a long time, very much like Troughton and personally I think he's about the best actor.
How is this all going to help? Are we going by averages? I put so and so at 1 someone else at 5 and we'll figure it out that way?
Every Doctor has something going for them it is totally personal opinion which is best and which isn't but there isn't going to be an easy way to mark them as we haven't seen all the episodes. We aren't a big enough group to really poll anything so the criteria for each is going to be something different.
Hartnell being the first is as good a reason for him being the number one as it is Tennant being the best because he's the one winning all the polls or Tom being the best as he's the most recognisable or Pertwee being best because we personally love his era best!
