I really think sports people need to be less hard on themselves. I know they need to be passionate and they need to be driven but why no excuses? I don't get it. For a start it is only their opening game they have two more to play, plus it'll be their hardest game being up against another big team and so much COULD go wrong. What if the ref hates England and gives Italy penalties just for the slightest thing THAT THERE isn't an excuse it is fact (or could be) and the same goes for Italy. I don't know. People say America is quite hard on their athletes but we do much better under pressure. I always got the impression that you only really ever get into it when the tournaments start up and then you don't celebrate when they've won or getting through you just seem to think they should and then put pressure on them. Now for everything I ever watch a win is a win and a lose is a lose and if you lose then you have to do better but if you win then all the supporters will have a party. I think its wrong that English people only support underdogs but you do tend to have a underdog perspective, that or you are always the victims of some heinous crime. When it is your fault you seem too busy blaming others and when it isn't you are too busy blaming your athletes. You see the underdog thing is something aimed at people with minds of their own usually. For example when I pointed out I was a Jenson Button fan and didn't like Lewis Hamilton much I was shouted down for being "scared" or "jealous" of talent. Personally Hamilton annoys me and I had always supported Jenson, just having a driver come in and win all the time isn't enough for me to support them. That very much is like band wagon jumping. With the football team I agree. We have the pride as a nation for the team but we have the expectations that we should be winning. Nothing is good enough other then winning. No one wants to take the positives from the match, OK to be fair MOTD did but fans and others are picking them apart for no reason at all. I just feel the "if you don't win there are no excuses" thing strange. England played well, yeah there was no excuse because the fact is Italy just played better. They got one more goal but that doesn't mean that England failed. I hardly ever hear about the team in friendlies or the qualifying for tournaments it all centres on the Euros and World Cup and maybe you are right, maybe we need to look at it longer term.
