I do wish that Alpha's hadn't been axed but it was two different shows.
I loved Alpha's because of the dynamics in the team but the big problem is that it was just a cop show. Not that it matters, it was great, and the stories were awesome.
But Heroes was different. Heroes really did just have normal people dealing with things and its an aspect of the show that got lost the longer it went on. I'm not saying that the show didn't have problems, it had giant problems (and yes they got attached to characters, I mean how long does it really take to kill off Nathan?!) but it was very different to Alphas.
I am slowly working my way back through Heroes and finding it interesting to compare it to my memory. When you haven't got a vested interest in what is going on you can enjoy it much more, the stories didn't always leave it on a high note, sometimes you were left wondering what the hell they were doing but when you don't care and just watch it you see that they really attempted to put a lot of layers down in the characters, all of them were really interesting, the biggest problem was it was VERY comic bookish, in that no one really seemed to run an idea by other people so storylines became disjointed and different people wanted to tell their story whether or not it made sense against the story they told the week before.
I also find that I enjoy Peter more and more when I rewatch it. I hated Peter the first time around because he was such a wet blanket. When you know more about the series you kind of respect him a little more.... Well...... Other then in series 2 when he leaves his new girlfriend in the future and seems to forget about it.
And that was my biggest problem. Characters got forgotten about. Molly and Matt were great together and then Molly disappeared. It sucked.
I do think they wanted to stick to certain types of stories and certain characteristics. Peter and his story and Sylar and his was very repetitive, even if they changed their minds the new story was always very similar to the one before.
I think its biggest downfall was not following the anthology style series, having new "Heroes" every series. Series 2 was a mistake (good ideas, marred by the writers strike and then forgotten about in series 3) and the need to make normal people special.
That is the thing that Alphas did to right. Normal people were just normal, they weren't all connected in the most stupid ways just so they could all be special. But Alphas was just a different view on the detective angle, Heroes really was one of the reasons Superhero/comic book shows/films got momentum because EVERYONE I knew loved Heroes. I was late to Heroes because I have a "if it sounds over hyped, ignore it" attitude. But EVERYONE ADORED series 1 whether they were superhero/comic book fans or people like my sister who hates fantasy/sci-fi/comic books etc.
