There is a fandom for everything, and one mans fandom is another mans hatred. But does the word "Fandom" now come with a negative connotation. With the invention of social outlets like Tumblr how has this word changed? Do you believe fandom has a bad name? Which fandoms do you belong to? Which fandoms have you had a problem with? (Sorry it is a bit late when I did try and come on earlier the forum wasn't working, just coming on to post before bedtime )

Problem with fandoms are they are made of everyone that likes that product. You get the morons, the losers, the squares, the nerds and everything in between bnelow ad above. Lets face it we are all in fandoms and are on a certain level normal healthy minded people. Then you get the 40 year old Bronies who draw pony porn. You get fans who think that every other fandom is small fry. The people who are in a fandom that hs been around for 10 years and try saying they are better and bigger then one that has been around for 50. Its just you know... weirodos. I'm in wrestling fandom and we basically spend 100% of time trawling through life arguing about whether TNA or WWE is better, with one or two people moaning that ROH or blah blah from dah dah land is better. Then the fun of "Cena sucks" "Cena rules" or moaning about The Screw Job. It gets boring and every thread in a forum at one point turns into something of the sort. I've taken a look at Tumblr and things like the Potter fandom and sucj is just pathetic. But fandom shouldn't have a negative connotation because fandom is just a name for every single fan of one thing.

Fandom for me, as Pete said, is just a word for fans. Fan girls/boys use it as a catch all for fans the like you'll get on Tumblr. Now there is no problem with 90% of every fandom. That 10% give us a bad name and its unfair because these bad names stick and it gets annoying and ends with people who are usually balanced and fair to get pissed and annoyed at people. For me recently this has all been shown on Tumblr. I follow a lot of confession blogs because I find them interesting. Recently I've seen Potter fans complaining about SuperWhoLock and how they are the "older" and "bigger" fandom and they are fed up of these "new" fandoms showing up and stealing their fandom. Well I'm sorry Potter fans Whovians have been around for 50 years and don't get me started on Trekkies! Fandom didn't start with Potterheads. But similary I'm fed up of this mashing of fandoms, SuperWhoLock... Well yeah I like Doctor Who and Sherlock and they fit as British dramas made by the same people but were does Supernatural fit in? Obviously the thing you'll find with fandoms is that they like the same general things you do so that is how SuperWhoLock was born, to be honest I say I'm fed up but I'm not really... Its just one of those things really. Fandom will give itself a bad name, I was reading something about Christopher Tolkien not liking LotR fandom (though he seems a miserable git anyway) because he's seen some of the fans and think the message of the books have been lost. That isn't true, all fandoms have very talented and imaginative people in them and they work hard making wonderful things out of the media that means most to them. Some of the bad name that fandom has is just because they are passionate about something which is totally horrible! For me I'm in a few fandoms. F1, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Tom Hiddleston, Marvel.... We all argue, we all have different opinions and sometimes I sit there in total amazement at the small mindedness of some of those 10% but most of the time I laugh, I cry and I'm in awe of the talent. I mean I spent 10 minutes reading an ongoing debate on whose bum a screencap is. Heck you just have to see some of the amazing things that Hiddleston fans have done to see how amazing fandoms can be, look at GPD and his charity raising. Fandom doesn't deserve a bad name, everyone and everything has bad areas and everyone and everything has good areas you can't tar us with one brush.

I totally agree with everything you say but I think it is mean to say that these people are weirdos or not normally healthy minded (I know you're joking but still ) to be fair people just have different ways of expressing themselves.... But talking about Bronies and pony porn... Have you read the story of the "letter" to a DevianArt user asking him not to draw or ask for pictures of Twilight Sparkle because he's engaged to her and he didn't appreciate it?! What a laugh! I like to believe it was just a joke but some people think he was serious.

Beautifully written I'm only really in the F1 fandom if you can call it that. From the little I've seen I've been a bit annoyed to be grouped with some of these "fan girls" , they annoy me stalking drivers girlfriends, posting horrible things about the drivers they dislike girlfriends, just being mean to someone because they aren't good looking. Yuck! I can't stand it to be honest. And the total annoyingness of some of the squabbles which basically look like "I like driver X and if you don't then you are just wrong" just get over yourself! But I agree that has nothing to do with anything. That is a very small amount of fandom, most of them are lovely and funny. I don't mind gossips that is all fine as long as it isn't really weirdly done and stalkerish. Most of fandom are lovely and have welcomed me with open arms The fans that have scared me a little are the pop star ones on twitter. Again I know it isn't all of them but as we were saying the other week they kind of stalk as a pack and jump on anyone for the smallest of reasons.

But it is what I'm getting at, I'm an F1 fan and I don't do that. Even people who are interested in and follow the girlfriends aren't as bad as what Maggie and Essie could be like. You can't hold a fandom to a label that only a handful of people will have. (Sorry was going to reply more but I am FURIOUS with the F1 and am off to rant about Ross Brawn and how DARE they talk to Nico Rosberg like that how dare they make out that overtaking Lewis for a podium wasn't going to do anything. ANGER!)

If they can't be polite about our difference in opinion then to me their opinion is voided. I know that fandom is made of the good and bad people but I've always thought "fan" and "fandom" are two different things. Fandom are the idiots whilst normal fans just get on with being a fan of something. I do agree with what Anna says about not being able to tar all of "fandom" with one brush but at the same bloody time these fandoms get bad names because the "bad" ones WANT them to have a bad name. They want to "war" with other fandoms and ignore even their own fandoms views.

I mean before the days of Tumblr and all that you had "Trekkies" and "Whovians" and they were just "fans", I don't know if other groups had their own name but it was always fans. To me personally fandom is a word I've only heard recently, though I can usually tell when someone means "fandom" (a group of fans) or FANDOM. I mean having your own personal group name hasn't gone away. Isn't Benedict Cumberbatch fans called Cumberbitches? Or did they change it? The moment I heard people refer to themselves like that I double taked as it was such a terrible name to call a bunch of fans, when you actually saw a lot of the things they did though you knew they were nice enough, probably just changes in language recently. Still now if I met a Doctor Who fan they'll either saw "I'm a fan" or "I'm a Whovian" it really is only on social media I actually hear talk of "fandoms". And usually then only because they are the mostest bestest fandom eva! And this other fandom who actually is pretty similar to ours and has a lot of cross over fans anyway is worse then ours for really pointless but important to us reasons!

Last time I was anywhere near Tumblr Benedict fans they were Cumberbitches but then again last time I was near Tumblr Benedict fans was when we had the riots in London, soon after Tumblr became unusable for my laptop and when I came back I came back on a new account for anime and only just got back into other things. Tom Hiddleston fans are Hiddlestoners, they are a wonderful fandom do a lot of charity raising for Toms charity causes and send him all manners of weird and wonderful things! I think fandom is a nice geeky word though, there is no way to say it in such a snotty way as some people say fan and it gives them a nice friendly feel. I know you get the donkeys in all groups but most of the time overall they are friendly. Says the girl who spends most of her time stalking 20 fandoms but never really being part of any .
