We tend to look back on our childhoods and teen years with great joy and pleasure. Everything is better back in the day. Or do we just look at the past through rose tinted glasses? Your tastes and interests are moulded from a young age so when the world changes we'll be left behind. Is it safe to say that you are clinging onto the past instead of embracing the future or is it really better the way it was?! Debate ends : 30th August

Our tastes are moulded when we are a kid so obviously when we grow up and times change our tastes will have to change with them. The big problem then is you are kind of cut off from a portion of what you grew up with. I watched things like Bananas in Pajamas, Fireman Sam, Postman Pat etc when I was a kid but when I started going to secondary school I stopped watching them. Since I was a kid CGI has become THE thing for TV and the ways that those shows were made have stopped. So now over a decade later I have a 4 year old niece who wants to watch the NEW Bananas in pajamas or Postman Pat which is made for a different generation and has moved with the times in animation styles. Personally I prefer the things I grew up with, since watching these shows and growing up I've learnt all about stupid political things and adult things that make me compare the two with a cynical eye. Then again when I was growing up EVERYTHING was much better just because .

I do think our tastes are moulded but there are somethings that just don't need to "change with the times" hence why some things are "timeless classics". It seems certain companies (Disney) forget this and they've "matured" up some of their films thinking they'll keep the 90s children interested whilst introducing their children or younger siblings. The thing is it is totally different! Look at Toys Story for example, the first two films were just fun kids films with really sad stories and happy endings. Toy Story 3 was more like "well all these kids have grown up now so we'll make a film for them" instead of having a few subtle grown up things like Woody and Boo Peep we get in your face relationship issues between Buzz and Jessie. Why? I'm dreading seeing Monsters University and Finding Dory! I miss classic films like Aladdin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and even things like Winnie the Pooh (which went politically correct and had to have a female as Christopher Robin in the new CGI shows because there were too many male characters!) Music is my bug bear, I know each generation sounds the same to a point but I miss having just happy go lucky tunes, now everything has to be exactly the same, a rip off of something else or else about sex.

At the end of the day it is the something they need to add to keep the parents happy. I do think there has been a shift in music being about love and being about sex though. That might purely be down to the way we want to think about it though, videos and dance have moved on that is all. Look at Brittany, "Hit me baby one more time" is just as innuendo based as anything else she's sang but I wouldn't mind my kids seeing that music video, I'd have doubts over some of hers though. I agree also that there isn't much of a real selection from pop music now. It all sounds samey or has plagiarized someone else's tunes. Maybe we were just too young to see it when we were kids? Does the new Winnie the Pooh movie have a girl in it?

When I was a kid I didn't know what that song was about or that the video was dodgy, I didn't care either (not that I liked it.) It isn't in the movie its in one of the TV shows. From the little I saw of it the show was terrible.

You forgive crap more easily, I loved Power Rangers but lets face it Power Rangers was crap. It still is but as an adult and now its aimed at a different generation it wasn't my crap therefore its even more crap. Music has gotten worse because things like emo rock became popular so then some of the punk/nu-rock bands went emo and their music has sucked ever since. If anything life just sucs alot more now. Its all real life drama faked for the cameras

Yes I'll never forgive Greenday their music is so generic since American Idiot. People keep telling me my taste has just changed but there are many bands that I still love their music because it wasn't such a massive swerve. Look at Rammstein and how their music has changed, its just evolved as they grew older. Thing is Nu-Rock (or was it Nu-Metal) was brilliant but then ALL the bands that made that small group went in different directions. Linkin' Park and Korn went more towards rap music, Greenday and a few others went emo and the Ska bands got a little lost but stayed awesome. The only other band that changed IMAGE but their music stayed pretty much the same was LostProphets. I can't watch half their music videos but I can easily listen to their music. Power Rangers has always been crap (says the Power Ranger fan) that really is just tastes changing because it is exactly like the old stuff. Hammy American shows just don't age well and they never bloody change....

Aug 23, 2013 22:43:22 GMT Post by Amanda on Aug 23, 2013 22:43:22 GMT It is funny just now Greenday where trending and I looked to see people saying how much they love them then I come here and earlier today you are moaning that they changed and are now shit (Basket Case is also trending FYI) Different types of music though, you can't say that there was any real movement from them because they are the ones that pioneered that genre because it is bands that loved their music that made emo rock and then they joined in because it was similar anyway. Linkin' Park I'll agree with though they went in a totally opposite direction in one way and then kept re-recording (or re-editing) their music.... Yeah lets not go there. I personally think a lot of kids TV was better. Power Rangers I never liked anyway, I never liked "live action" American shows (not that the English had any worth mentioning) but look at some cartoons. We in the UK had great things like Dragon Ball Z, Coward the Dog, Three Friends and Eddy, Dexter s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls... Now whenever I look its just..... Crap. I hate having to watch kids stuff. I mean fair enough some of these are still shown but the stuff replacing it isn't anywhere near as good. And do not get me started on the Disney channel shows. Where have hopelessly wonderful classics like Sabrina gone?!

I hated Cars and I'll probably hate Planes when I've seen that. I don't get the point of it. I remember getting excited by things like A Bugs Life and thinking how different it is, now if you put a film drawn like Sleeping Beauty I'd be the same. How times change hey? I don't like it at times that they look so real, it takes everything away from an animation when the characters actually pretty much look like slightly modified versions of their voice actor.

Interesting, I can't say I disliked it but we don't need EVERYTHING turning into a movie by Pixar. What next? Kitchen sinks?! Pixar have a lot of good ideas and Disney and Pixar have some BRILLIANT films and I guess they are kind of written with this type of generation in mind. They hit more than miss with films like (recently) Toy Story 3, Monsters University, Wreck it Ralph, Tangled.... I do think they should invest in keeping hand drawn cartoons but isn't CGI and all that cheaper and less time consuming? Maybe not by too much but you think they have to draw out storyboards then animate them, yeah we love those stories but it is much easier now. They won't throw something like that away to replace it with something "old hat". Personally I dislike how fast hand drawn cartoons disappeared from our screens. Then again I'm in the wrong age group to really complain. One thing I have to say I'm grateful for is I was born to Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo, they are aimed at my generation and the new stories still feel like they are aimed at me, only like Pixar/Disney are saying goodbye and good luck to us (Andy having to grow up and give his toys away, us separating from our childhood, we fell in love with these lovable Monsters and now we're going back to when they are in uni just about when we've either just joined up to uni or just left...) Then again life is just different now a days...

No. Never. Every generation learns a different lesson and you add it to your kids. So kids grow up with different moral structures and so on. So what our parents thought wasn't something we needed to know when we were kids we'll think isn't a big deal and will pass on to our kids. Especially because a big proportion of kids will be born into younger families anyway.
