I just want to add : I found the sub story of the civil war, terrorism and the way it is easy to plant seeds to concern in people's minds and make them do terrible things was brilliant.
You might think the dwarfs were the bad guys and the railway was the good guys but I really felt like in the end the real story was actually about the dwarfs and the railway was a distraction to the audience.
The whole idea of small things like the burning of clacks towers turning into cold blooded murder and it all being just normal average people doing the deeds is scary because it really is something that happens in this day and age. When you have someone with the right charisma and the right speech the big problem is that people who might be upset by any old thing could be manipulated. I have to say though that I agree with you on Moist, whilst its obvious why he is the way he is and that he is helpful and that is why he's used he gets on my nerves when he takes the moral high ground like : berating the children who caused the landslides father for what they did and saying he better come and help. Yes OK neither would I want the kids to have been smacked for it, but that is from the place OUR society is from, in the Discworld that kind of thing is still rife and to be quite honest this is a bit different then stupid things like stealing THEY COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE and yes Moist scared the shit out of the kid but then he had a morale shouting match with the kids dad when the kids dad was totally on his side. It wasn't like he told his kid to go and do that she did it herself and it really winds me up that he had a go at the dad. I am really sad that : We didn't get to see Adora Bella and Lady Sybil interact.
In fact them two with Effie would have been great.
The thing is Adora Bella is the "in your face obviously strong, independent women" character whereas Sybil really has stood on her own two feet. If anything Sybil is the better of the two characters, Adora Bella has her reasons for a lot of things but she also is actually very weak as a character, she's a character that seems to be purely feminist by making her a male in female clothing. There isn't much to her, she's one of those annoying people who believe in the rights to everyone but is actually very backwards and only a "strong" women because she forces it.
Sybil on the other hand stands on her own two feet, has real concerns and real feelings and has a real and very sweet relationship with Sam.
I think a lot of AB backwards views and brash in your face character traits would fall on their ass in front of a true wonderfully written character like Sybil and someone I think is close to greatness in Effie. I mean he's written her wonderfully from zero to something yet keeping modest whilst wanting to better herself. And is it just me but does anyone else think that Ray Winston would be a great Harry King and the guys from 44.Chest would be great for his friends that he uses to sort out trouble?
