Yeah but there is this thing online at the moment that a hoaxer got banned from twitter but two seemingly innocent people then got badgered for no reason. One got their account suspended but obviously by it reappearing he's proven he was innocent and the second has had all sorts of abuse thrown at it. Now they could all be connected to the hoaxer, but other then small coincidental things they have no proof it is the same person or a friend of theirs. I always thinks its best to leave well alone, if you have proof or know something is a proven hoax then fair enough to make sure people know about it, but some people go so over the top thinking they are in the right. I mean these people might be right but they've attacked these accounts with no proof other then similar interests, the fact their blogs are all ran by the same group and the fact that they go on and on about "bullying". Trolls are a different matter, you can tell a troll a mile off, but its best not to talk too much to them or if you do don't call them out for being a troll as you can get in trouble for doing that in many forums now. Also sometimes some people actually really mean what they are saying and aren't trolling, just being a bit OTT and you'll probably really get in trouble in that case! You can't be cautious with it though, hoaxer can do a lot of damage and I'd rather they annoyed (because lets face it bullying is too harsh for what most people claim it to be) someone for a little to make sure they aren't a hoaxer then to ignore the point and let them spread. I mean the latest one I think your talking about was able to go on so long because until he started pissing off important people no one cared what he was doing. But I'll agree that you never call out a troll, someone on another forum tried to call out a troll and it ended up being an autistic guy who got the other person in shit loads of trouble for insulting him, though to be honest the guy was being a dick. But you just can't tell when someone is just being a dick because it really is their opinion or if they are being a dick for the sake of being a dick! So your ok with the idea of someone innocent being hounded on the internet for daring to have something similar with a known hoaxer or that posts in a "similar" style? Because for me that isn't enough. If you THINK there is something going on keep an eye on them, don't publicly announce that, that person IS the hoaxer in a different disguise, warn twitter fair enough but by publicly posting the girls username meant that someone who could be totally innocent was hounded by a bunch of over emotional people who wanted to know everything from her age to her shoe size! Yeah I admit that she could be a hoaxer for all I know, but basing this idea and publicly telling people she IS without ANY proof, before she's done ANYTHING to deserve the hate she got is wrong. If she isn't a hoaxer then the people publicly announcing she was really did the wrong thing. Yeah you can be overly cautious of the matter but do that by keeping an eye on the situation and when it becomes 100% apparent THEN do something!
But ouch about the troll! I know it is so difficult getting into a discussion with someone who is very forceful but as you pointed out sometimes it is just the poster and maybe they can't help it! Maybe just their word choices have made them seem that way but they don't actually mean to be, calling them a troll is then unfair. But still genuine trolls are so funny (not the malicious kind mind you )
