Well I've seen Desolation of Smaug and was very... Confused on my feelings for it. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but I think Jackson's focus shifted too much really.
I didn't mind the expansion of Legolas in the franchise, it actually worked, and I loved the female elf. That is all fine.
But on the other hand I don't know why for a start the very short time they spent with Beorn had to be made... Shorter. Beorn had to be made less important then he was. Or why the split the dwarves into two groups leaving two who ******* die in Lakeside so that one of them can have a romance with the girl elf. Or why the dwarves had to fight Smaug.
I'm happy that Smaug isn't dead and that we still have to see Bard kill him. Also obviously I don't know what I'm talking about obviously the last film is going to focus heavily on the Battle of the 5 Armies. But I feel that the whole "we have to have the good looking cast doing what good looking cast do" stance kind of killed a little of the magic of the Hobbit this time around.
The bits that are just LIKE the Hobbit are magical. The extended fight sequence with Smaug left me cold. And as that came right at the end (and why have they got pop singers instead of good old fashioned LotR Enya?) it left a bad taste in the mouth.
And I'm sorry if you haven't read the books but Fili and Kili both die so what is the point of them being left in Laketown? To make one of their deaths more terrible because he's got a girlfriend who'll live forever? Give me a break! It was a good movie though. Lee Pace as Thranduil was the highlight of the movie (and I don't usually like Lee Pace!)
