You don't see vast cities like this anymore, it wasn't that long ago but look at Dredd and all that, futuristic worlds seem to have become a thing of the past. Whys that? I think this movie is much more dated then most movies around it. Really you look at the spectacle of LotR with a world that looks so real that you can touch it then compare it to this world which looks fake, shiny and quite plain and boring. They came out the same time but the world just didn't click. Now they tend to focus on smaller parts of a futuristic world to make it look real. Focus the SFX department on small areas and make it look good instead of giant cities that look fake. I mean look at how stupid the scene outside the windows looks right now. Just doesn't look real. I guess that explains it, though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is doing grand scale sets rather well, I guess Disney will make it more realistic. I doubt Abrams is going to want to ground it, and Star Wars by nature is very much about the vastness of the whole universe.
